Eat: Breadbelly
I love finding small niche cafes and bakeries and when Breadbelly popped up in my old neighborhood I was one of the first people in line to try it out (along with my eating partner in crime, Lydia). The owners are big name fine dining alums from the likes of Atelier Crenn and Mourad. They’re bringing Asian inspired pastries and dishes with a modern California twist to the Richmond district.
Our first trip there we tried the IG worthy kaya toast (which is coconut pandan cream over a thick slice of milk bread), and their mushroom broth soup that can cure anything from the cold to the flu to your worst hangover (which is what we were both suffering from when we ate there). The second time I went Elliott and I got the char siu sando and it was great. They have an array of freshly baked goods like the anko sticky bun with azuki beans and the “not ube” tart with purple sweet potato, toasted meringue and salted egg. You can’t skip out on their brown butter mochi either.
This spot is the perfect place to pop in for a sesame horchata or coffee drink of your liking and some pastries or a full on sit down meal complete with a cucumber and avocado smashed salad and a kare-pan bun (curry filled milk bread).
