Eat: My Canh

Many people think that Vietnamese food means pho and spring rolls. This is not the case. There are so many different varieties of Vietnamese noodle soups (and other Vietnamese dishes) and they all offer up something unique and delicious.

A favorite of mine is called Banh Canh which is a thicker broth served with udon type noodles. This small shop in between Chinatown and North Beach is a hole in the wall place where you’ll find locals and people who have been out for drinks and are craving a late night noodle bowl. You can get your soup fix on until 2 am in the morning. The hearty broth is often served with seafood or imitation crab and the thick udon noodles are a perfect pair to the broth. It’s definitely the way to go if you are looking for something a little bit thicker and more filling.

My suggestion for finding good specialized noodle soups is to go to a place that has mastered 1 or 2 soup types because the broth takes a lot of time to make and if the restaurant isn’t fully committed then you might be disappointed with that you get.
