Fried Pork Wontons
Easy Fried Pork Wontons
A family favorite recipe that’s fun and freezer-friendly!
Looking for a crowd-pleasing appetizer with crispy golden edges and a juicy savory dumpling filling? Fried Pork Wontons will satisfy your craving!
This recipe is especially dear to my heart because it’s the exact recipe that I grew up eating - made by my mom at every holiday and special occasion. As soon as they’re out of the fryer, and before they can even hit the table, they vanish.
You can make wontons a 100 different ways, but this one is my favorite.
The filling is packed with ground pork, garlic, veggies and a hint of ginger. It’s flavorful, juicy and oh so easy to adapt.
Looking for a vegetarian or vegan version? Swap in your favorite plant-based protein (like Impossible Foods or Beyond Burger) and use vegan wonton wrappers like the ones from Nasoya. They are my preferred brand of pre-made wrappers for this type of wonton.
Let’s talk dipping sauces
A good dipping sauce can really elevate these wontons. I like to serve these with two different sauces:
Sweet and sour sauce
Spicy mustard mixed with soy sauce and garlic chili crisp!
More Questions? Check out the FAQ’s
Can I freeze pork wontons before cooking?
Yes! Flash freeze them on a tray first, then transfer to a zip-top bag. You can fry or air fry straight from frozen—just add an extra minute or two to the cooking time.
Can I make these vegetarian or vegan?
Absolutely. Use a plant-based ground meat alternative and vegan wonton wrappers (Nasoya is a great brand). The flavor is still delicious!
What’s the best way to seal wonton wrappers?
Just a little water works like glue. Be sure to press the edges firmly so the filling doesn't leak out while cooking.
Can I use an air fryer instead of deep frying?
Yes! Air frying makes them lighter but still crisp. Just brush or spray them with oil and cook at 380°F for 6–8 minutes.
What sauce should I serve with these?
We love sweet and sour sauce, or a mix of soy sauce + spicy mustard. Chili crisp or vinegar-based dipping sauce also works great.
How long do cooked wontons stay crispy?
They’re best enjoyed immediately. Leftovers can be reheated in the oven or air fryer to regain crispiness, but they’re never quite as crunchy as freshly fried.
Fried Pork Wontons Recipe
Yield: ~ 50-60 wontons
Prep Time: 1 hour, Total Time: 2 hours (dependent on how many you plan to cook)
Ingredients:
1 lb ground pork (or plant-based alternative like Impossible/Beyond)
5 cloves garlic, finely minced
1 tsp ginger (grated or jarred)
½ cup water chestnuts, finely diced
2 celery sticks, finely diced
3 green onions, thinly sliced
1 tsp Asian seasoning (or salt + pepper to taste)
1 package square wonton wrappers (about 60)
Small bowl of water (for sealing)
Neutral oil for frying
Dipping sauces: sweet & sour, soy sauce with spicy mustard, or your favorite
Directions:
Make the filling: The filling can be prepared up to a day before you plan to cook your wontons. Wash, dry, and chop all the vegetables, ginger, and garlic listed above. Set aside in a medium sized bowl.
In a medium pan, cook the ground pork until browned. Season with your preferred Asian seasoning or kosher salt and pepper. Add the garlic, ginger, water chestnuts, celery, and green onions. Cook for 2–3 minutes, just enough to keep the veggies crisp. Let the mixture cool to room temp before assembling.
Wrap the wontons: Do not begin filling your wrappers until the filling has come to room temperature. If you try to fill while it’s hot, the wrappers become flimsy and may break apart or tear.
Once the filling is cool, prepare a large tray with parchment paper.
Lay a wrapper in your palm like a diamond. Spoon 1 tbsp of filling into the center. Dip your finger in water and wet the top two edges. Fold the bottom corner up to meet the top and press to form a triangle. Pinch all the edges tightly to seal.
Freeze (Optional): To freeze (if not cooking right away), place the wrapped wontons on parchment-lined trays and flash freeze for 15-20 minutes. Then transfer to a freezer safe bag.
Deep Frying or Air Fryer Instructions
Deep Fry Method: Heat 2–3 inches of oil in a pot to 375°F. Fry wontons in batches for about 5 minutes, flipping halfway, until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
Air Fryer Method: Spray wontons with oil and cook at 380°F for 6–8 minutes until crispy.
This should give you an idea of the size you want your veggies to be.
Fill with just the right amount, it takes a bit of practice to get it right!
Try some different folds. I prefer the triangle, super easy and no folding required!
These work perfect in a small deep fryer.
